TMHS Music Department
On Friday May 20, 2016, the Tourtellotte Memorial High School Concert Band and Concert Choir attended the Great East Music Festival Competition at Manchester High School in Manchester, Connecticut. Under the direction of Mrs. Kate Anderson, the Choir achieved the top rating of platinum for a second consecutive year! The Band was able to capture high gold and was a mere three points away from achieving the top honor of platinum. The judges for the event consisted of current music educators, who have adjudicated this music festival for the past 15 years. The concert choir performed three pieces in their repertoire. After their performance, the judges who adjudicated them verbalized that they were very impressed with our tone quality and mature choir sound. While the judges worked with the choir, the students were treated to new musical insight and higher level vocal techniques provided by the adjudicator. After the concert band performed their two musical selections, the judges noted that for a small ensemble, they had an excellent ensemble sound. They were especially impressed with the many students who have just taken up new instruments this year, and their ability to play the highly technical music performed. All of the TMHS Music students worked extremely hard to prepare for our competition. Their hard work and dedication to our music department was illustrated through our highest achievement two years in a row under Mrs. Anderson’s direction. Our first trip to the Great East Festival was four years ago at Manchester High School. Our growth in four years impressed the judges and illustrated our amazing talent here at Tourtellotte!
After the performances, the groups attended Six Flags over New England. The groups enjoyed a very beautiful day and stayed almost until closing time taking in the sights, riding the rides, and building camaraderie with their fellow musicians.
